Why Lion Isn’t That Much Better

Lion OSX… King Of The Jungle, or Kitten in a  litter box?

With over one million  downloads per day, Apples highly anticipated OS X Lion has many people scratching their heads wondering… is this it? This is the King of the jungle?

Today’s review is, of course, on the notorious OS X Lion from Apple. While I myself am a Apple devote customer, I too was left with the feeling of being hoodwinked, bamboozled and taken for a ride, none of which, if your wondering, is a good thing. Okay, lets dig right in and discuss the pros (if any) and the cons of upgrading to Lion.

Apple claims that there are 250 new features that come with OS X Lion. Now these new features must be hidden very well because they are not noticeable by any means. Yes, there are some that are cool, easy to use, adjust to and not hard to find. The features of which I speak are the new launch pad, mission control, and desktops (which are pretty much spaces from Snow Leopard) and are the main things you will use. So then, where are the other 247 features?! If you have a MacBook Pro then you know the beauty of the new gestures. These gestures make it so much easier to navigate on web pages, navigate your mac and with the different programs gestures do different actions. If you own a MacBook and don’t have track pad then these gestures really don’t even exist to you.

Say Goodbye to Power PC Apps …

That’s right you heard me, all power PC Apps will no longer work with this update. If you value certain apps and aren’t ready to let them go just yet…DO NOT UPGRADE! Also, if you like using duel screens then the new feature of having full screen apps…isn’t for you. Apple for some odd reason made it so   that if you have more than one display, one gets grayed out when you use full screen. What is the point of that?! Your guess is as good as mine.

Another bad design is the way desktops work. They don’t work as there own

separate entity, as they should or that you were led to believe. If you have Safari open on one desktop, then start another desktop and try to open Safari it will simply bring you to the original desktop that Safari is already open on. Instead of navigating back to the desktop in which Safari is already open, I would much   rather it open up another web page on the current desktop I am on. For some odd reason Lion OSX also likes to make duplicates of Applications and store them in multiple places. This to me was extremely troubling because it is taking up unnecessary space on my hard drive. Also, when I attempt to delete one of the copies I am asked if I want to throw out all of the associated files! My thought   is, if I say yes will it delete all files associated just with that copy of the app or all files leaving the other copy just an empty shell?? All of this seems way too confusing to just throw away an extra copy of an app that shouldn’t have been   there in the first place.

One cool feature I did find was being able to log-in in remotely via Apple ID.   Before, in order to screen share or remote in you had to be a registered user or guest. Now there is a third option and that is by Apple ID! Okay, are you ready for the bad news now…? If you loved the ability to remote into your mac as much as I did, then you can say goodbye to that as well. Unless it’s Mac to Mac you can not use any VNC app, program, software etc. NOTHING!!!! This is by far the biggest upset about Lion. One VNC app I personally loved and used daily was Remote Tap. This is the only VNC that gives you audio and video at the same time giving the ability to hear and see…..and it’s GONE! Only one VNC client was said to work (Real VNC) and it doesn’t do that all the time, honestly you’re lucky if you even get it to work once. What happens is you get that nice gray screen   that Apples loves to show every chance they get. With the new updates they   did decrease the size of the app you see in mission control, the newest update includes iCloud, and offers a faster Safari.

With all that said, it’s now up to you to make the choice. Will this new OS X Lion   be King of the Jungle for you? Or just another Kitty in a Litter Box…. that you have to clean.
