This HP Pavilion DV9205 was intermittently working. No display would be shown after a reboot. Sometimes it was there sometimes it wasn’t. After some throrough investigation and research all signs pointed to a bad motherboard.
This Pavilion model line with the AMD chipset has had several documented issues with the embedded graphics. After scoring a used (but warrantied) motherboard online and swaping them out everything worked like a charm.
Obviously new high quality thermal paste was applied and I cleaned out the dust caught between the fan and the heatsink.
